NL Moves with Ainsley Dicks

NL Moves with Ainsley DicksNL Moves kicks off its new season with free Debke workshop

When: Saturday September 28 from 3pm-5pm

Where: LSPU Hall Second Space, 3 Victoria Street, St. John’s

DanceNL is proud to present the first NL Moves of the 2013-14 season – all are welcome to participate in this free Debke workshop with Ainsley Dicks.

Debke is a folk dance that’s done by people of all ages in Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Jordan, and Iraq. The movements consist mainly of steps, hops, kicks, and stomps, and dancers follow a leader in a line or a circle. This proud and joyful dance is done at weddings, parties, plays, and even social protests.

Ainsley Dicks will be leading this free workshop in association with the Resource Centre for the Arts and Culture Days. All are welcome to participate, free of charge. Dancers should wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Pants are preferable to skirts.

NL Moves is a monthly workshop series by DanceNL designed to expose the general public to many different dance genres while promoting wellness and physical activity. NL Moves workshops are led by DanceNL members and highlight some of the amazing work and skills of the dancers and movers of the province. NL Moves workshops are happening every month throughout Newfoundland until April 2014.

DanceNL is Newfoundland and Labrador’s first sectoral dance association. DanceNL’s mandate is “to preserve, promote and support all forms of dance and dance activities throughout the province.” Formed in 2009, DanceNL is working towards forging connections between dance professionals and enthusiasts across Newfoundland and Labrador, generating relevant programs and initiatives and promoting and gaining recognition for the province’s rich, varied and vibrant dance scene.

Ainsley Dicks has studied the dances of the Middle East for over a decade, training with expert instructors from around the world, including Ranya Renée, Morocco of New York, Mahmoud Reda, and Reyhan Tuzsuz. She taught Middle Eastern dance through Yale University’s recreation program for three years and served as an instructor and choreographer for the Yale Belly Dance Society for six. Ainsley is eager to share the beautiful dances of the Middle East with the Newfoundland community.
