DanceNL is the first sectoral dance association for the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Its mandate is “to preserve, promote and support all forms of dance and dance activities throughout the province.” Having been in existence since November 2009, DanceNL became incorporated in October 2010 and is now working towards forging connections between dance professionals and enthusiasts across Newfoundland and Labrador and promoting and gaining recognition for the province’s rich, varied and vibrant dance scene.
DanceNL’s first project was the Road Map survey 2010. Over 100 people took part in the survey and the responses gathered helped to build a picture of the breadth of dance activity happening across the province and to understand what kind of work the dance community both wants and needs DanceNL to undertake on its behalf.
Project funding from the CEDP (Cultural Economic Development Program), Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, enabled DanceNL to contract a Membership and Research Assistant, in addition to a Website Developer and Graphic Designer. Plans are already in place to recruit more members and encourage dialogue right across the NL dance community. In addtion, DanceNL is currently considering ways to provide information, resources and professional development opportunities along with a whole host of other possibilities for future projects.
DanceNL believes that the long term possibilities for the association and the work it undertakes are endless. There is much to do and, with the support of the province’s dance community, DanceNL is looking forward to getting dance in Newfoundland and Labrador placed very firmly on the map!
