BUTOH INSPIRED MOVEMENT

Using vocabulary drawn from the modern Japanese dance form Butoh, students will explore what it means to be present in the body. This is a meditative, non- judgmental movement process open to all skill levels. Students should dress in comfortable clothes. (Sweat pants or yoga pants, t-shirt, sweater)

Lisa Porter is a Multidisciplinary artist who works in film and on stage. She has taken instruction with Butoh artists Denise Fujiwara and Jocelyne Montpetit and will share some of what she has learned in this workshop.

Learn foundation moves for dancing the Tango socially at this FREE NL Moves workshop. Wear comfortable clothing. All are welcome.

Cecilia McGruer chairs the education committee for Tango on the Edge, a local Argentine Tango club, whose mission is to promote Argentine Tango as a dance genre in Newfoundland. Cecilia also dances ballroom, swing, and traditional Nfld. set dancing purely for pleasure.

NL Moves January – HoopFit with Cindy Butt

January 5, from 3 to 5 PM

Bishop Field School, Bond Street, St. John’s.

This workshop will introduce participants to the basics of hooping technique and to hooping for fitness. There will be an energetic warm-up  followed by instruction on Hooping & Toning combos using body weight with & without the hoop. The class will end with a relaxing cool down and stretching with the hoop. Please wear fitted clothing and indoor sneakers. Bring your hoop and if you don’t have one there will be hoops on site!

Creative Movement for Young People
with Robyn Breen

3rd Floor of the Arts and Culture Centre, St. John’s – Free


12:00 – 2:00 PM – Improvisation and Creative Movement – ages 13 – 17

This workshop will focus on improvisation and awareness skills. The workshop will begin with a guided contemporary warm-up, followed by exercises for generating creative movement. The workshop will culminate in the creation of spontaneous performances.

2:30 – 4:30 PM – Creative Movement and Choreography – ages 16 – 20
Designed for young artists interested in choreography, this workshop will answer questions like: “how do I get started?” Participants will move, experiment and talk, addressing ways to begin, how to edit, work with music, costume, etc.

A wonderful opportunity for the young dancer or choreographer in your life!

ABOUT ROBYN BREEN
Artistic Director of NewFoundDance, Robyn Breen graduated from the BFA (Honours) Dance Program at York University in 2010. Upon completion, she entered the Professional Training Program at the School of Toronto Dance Theatre where she is in her third year. During her studies, she has had the opportunity to work with choreographers such as Debra Brown (Cirque du Soleil), Danny Grossman, Heidi Strauss and the late Rachel Browne. Robyn recently received funding from the NLAC to commission a new solo work choreographed by dance theatre artist Jo Leslie. Robyn performed this solo during NewFoundDance’s August 2012 performance at the LSPU Hall.

All are welcome to this workshop that will introduce participants to the basics of hooping technique. Cindy has been spreading the fun of hooping through school groups and community outreach programs funded by the Wellness Coalition for Avalon East. She is co-founder of Hot Hoops, a small family business specializing in fun and fitness through hula hooping. As a lover of moving to the beat, Cindy has done classes and workshops with Deneen Connolly in Salsa and Bellydance, Andrea Kitta, Kristine Nolte, Monique Ryan and Ainsley Dicks in bellydance, Adwoa Badoe in African Dance, Judy Knee in Argentine Tango, and Esau Jardon in Salsa. She was also a member of the New World Fitness Demo Team, an aerobic dance group created to motivate others.

NL Moves – November – Introduction to Juggling with James Burke

Where: The George Street United Church, 25 Buchanan Street, St. John’s

When: Sunday, November 18th 12:30 – 2:30 P.M.

FREE to ALL AGES

James Burke will introduce the NL Moves workshop participants to various techniques for manipulating objects. He will work with objects designed for manipulation – balls, rings, clubs – to provide an understanding of the extensive research that has been done in this field. The class will then turn to found objects (comb, clothing, furniture, anything) and the possibilities of these objects will be explored. The workshop encourages the integration of the physical world into choreography. Please bring activewear, no loose clothing. Though not required participants are invited to bring a moderate weight ball and/or an interesting object.

DanceNL is proud to present our first NL Moves of the season – all are welcome to participate in this Free Flamenco Workshop with Christina Penney.

Introduction to Flamenco: traditional dance from southern Spain

Workshop Description: In the south of Spain, people grow up learning how to dance “por Fiesta”, which happens at gatherings and parties where people of all ages come together to celebrate with singing, dancing and music. In this workshop, dancers will be introduced to dancing “Tangos por Fiesta”, which is a fun style with a very lively rhythm, and one of the essential ingredients to any flamenco fiesta! Wear comfortable clothing and join us at 2 PM on Saturday September 29th at the Rooms! All are welcome.
