About Vandas Maunder
Vanda Maunder’s Dance Studio began in Brigus in 1973, with just a handful of students. Today, as a fully-qualified, experienced professional, she teaches ballet, jazz, tap, ballroom and step dancing to over 200 students, conducting weekly classes at her Brigus studio, and in Bay Roberts.
Vanda holds certificates in Ballroom Dance, Cecchetti Ballet and Tap Dancing from the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance in London, England, and Latin Dancing from the Canadian Dance teachers Association. Vanda has also studied traditional Step-Dancing with internationally-acclaimed expert, Mary Janet MacDonald in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. She is also a member of the Newfoundland Dance Teachers’ Association. Vanda’s performing step-dance group, “The Calico Steppers” have shown off their fancy footwork at hundreds of local festivals, conventions and community events, on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Canada Day, and in the United States as well.
Over the years, The National Ballet of Canada and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet have expressed interest in several of her classical students, who were then selected to attend summer programs at these institutions. For a number of years, Vanda been engaged by several local Elementary Schools to devise and instruct a very successful series of “Art Smart” programs, which incorporated dance as a means of augmenting instruction in the more traditional curricular subjects.
Vanda is a founding member of the “Baccalieu Players”, a Community Theatre group, who since 1996 have staged well-attended live theatre events in the area. Vanda received her academic education at Prince of Wales Collegiate and Memorial University in St. John’s. Along with her Dance Studio, Vanda also operates BodyActive, a small retail store dealing in dance and exercise wear. www.vandadance.ca
