November 19, 2013 (St. John’s, NL) – The Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council (NLAC) announced some new details for the upcoming 2014 Creative Residency, which is run in conjunction with Atlantic Public Art Funders (APAF) partners: New Brunswick Arts Board (artsnb), Arts Nova Scotia, and the Prince Edward Island Council of the Arts.
For the second year of the program, January 31, 2014 will be the new deadline for interested applicants in Newfoundland and Labrador. The program contact individual will also change to Donna Roberts, Labrador Cultural Outreach Officer.
“We have had a very positive pilot year with this program and as well as some excellent feedback,” said Reg Winsor, executive director of the NLAC. “I have every confidence that we will continue to receive high quality, creative applications for the year ahead. Donna’s experience as the NLAC program officer responsible for the Professional Artist Travel Fund and Labrador Cultural Travel Fund makes her an ideal point of contact for artists applying to this residency.”
Artists from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island or Newfoundland and Labrador can apply for up to $10,000 to cover a one-to-three month residency for a creation-based or professional development project in a province that isn’t their own.
The exchange is on a rotating basis. For 2014, New Brunswick artists can apply for residency opportunities in Newfoundland and Labrador and vice versa. Prince Edward Island artists can apply for residency opportunities in Nova Scotia and vice versa.
The agreement established an annual exchange program that provides professional artists with opportunities for creation and professional development residencies in the participating provinces. Artists participating in this program enjoy complete autonomy and define the objectives of their period of residence and elaborate the parameters and conditions governing its realization in collaboration with an arts or community organization in the territory where the period of residence is to take place.

The NLAC is a non-profit Crown agency created in 1980 by The Arts Council Act. Its mission is to foster and promote the creation and enjoyment of the arts for the benefit of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. The Council is governed by a volunteer board of 13 appointed by government, reflecting regional representation of the province. This includes 10 professional artists who provide sectoral representation of the arts community; one community representative (with an interest in the arts); one business representative (with an interest in the arts); and one representative of the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation (non-voting). The NLAC receives an annual contribution of $2.1 million from the Province to support a variety of granting programs, program delivery, office administration, and communications. It also seeks support from the public and private sector. It supports the following artistic disciplines: dance, film, multidiscipline, music, theatre, visual art, and writing.
