DanceNL is very pleased to welcome dancers of all levels to this workshop with Memorial University’s first Dancer-in-Residence, Karen Kaeja.
With curiosity and fascination, Karen delivers presently occurring movement acquisitions through individual and group movement enquiries. She brings 30 years of dance Improvisation and Partnering to her workshop offerings. Karen embraces fluid dynamics of the imagination and embodiment, that ignite you into a juicy and sensorial state of readiness to play and explore. She creates a safe space where being fully engaged with internal and external perception, encourages participants to take creative risk in presence, focus and ingenuity.

Karen Kaeja is co-artistic director of Kaeja d’Dance with Allen Kaeja and is celebrated as “one of this country’s top ten dance artists, most watchable performers and a champion of contact dance” NOW Magazine. A Dora Award nominee, she has received the CDA “I Love Dance” Award for her vision of Porch View Dances and the Paul D. Fleck, for Innovation, among others. A passionate performer for over 80 stage works and 20 dance films, she is a choreographer and project instigator who is recognized with commissions and performance presentations of international acclaim. Karen’s choreography “disconnects the eyes from the mind, and re-wires them to the heart” Calgary Herald, and “truly leaves an indelible impression with real substance and choreographic intelligence…dance that delivers” Toronto Star. A sought after educator at conferences, festivals and universities, she embraces community and audience inclusive ideology. She has been teaching improvisation/partnering for 24 years at the school of Toronto Dance Theatre. Karen was the 2012 Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival resident artist, the chosen 2014 ‘City of Toronto’ dance company to animate Historic Sites and has recently been selected as Memorial University/Dance NL’s first dance artist in residence. www.kaeja.org
