International Dance Day Call to Action!

Named by UNESCO to celebrate dance around the world on April 29 every year, International Dance Day encourages dancers and non-dancers alike to participate in and enjoy dance in a celebratory environment.

DanceNL invites you to help us celebrate International Dance Day in 2011. We have three activities planned:

1) The “Dare to Dance” Campaign

DanceNL began this campaign last year as a simple way for everyone to celebrate dance. Through public announcements and other PR, we will encourage everyone to take some time to dance on April 29th. Help us spread the word! You can also join us on Facebook to tell us of your dance plans for that day.

2) “Random Acts of Dance”

During the week of April 25-30, we are looking for dancers to participate in these activities. The idea is for dance to ‘spontaneously’ happen in public places where there are lots of people around. You’ll never know who might suddenly start dancing! Please get in touch if you are interested – we are looking for dancers (and musicians, if you wish) to perform all kinds of dance all over the province. You choose the dance, you choose the location, we’ll help make it happen. We hope to have this happen all over Newfoundland and Labrador.

3) A Flash Mob Dance, in cooperation with Canada’s National Ballet School (NBS)

One day during Dance Week (on or close to April 29, exact date TBA) we are going to perform a flash mob. A Flash Mob Dance is when a large group of people assemble suddenly in a public place, perform a dance for a brief period of time, and then disperse. This dance is one of several following the same choreography that will occur across the country. NBS is working with dance organizations across the country to accomplish this.

Although the flash mob is in conjunction with the National Ballet School, we want everyone to know that the choreography is very easy to learn and perform by people as young as 7 years old. It will be fun and danceable by all ages, all levels and all backgrounds of dance. Part of the fun of a flash mob is having a large group perform, so we want lots of dancers!!

Right now, we have flash mobs planned in St. John’s, Corner Brook, Gander and Grand Falls-Windsor. If you live somewhere else, and would like to participate, let us know and we’ll get you the choreography and instructions. And we’ll help publicize your event, and even contact your municipality to ask them to officially declare April 25-30 Dance Week.
